The following is an edit from the Document entitled
Ottawa Valley ASHRAE Chapter "50 Years of History"
compiled by Frank Bann et al., June 2000

The Chapter Meetings continued at the Cathay House through this Chapter year.

The meeting minutes are missing for this year but the newsletters are intact and afford the following:

This year was significant because it introduced a September meeting. The topic of the meeting was "Selection of Fans for VAV Systems" and the speaker was Nicholas Weber-Brown, General Manager of Woods Fans, North America.

In October the meeting topic was "Small Reactors for Central Heating Systems" [yes you read that right] with speaker J. Hillborn of AECL Chalk River. He spoke about the SLOWPOKE series of nuclear reactors, using fully enriched uranium fuel, water moderator and beryllium reflector. These were then used in universities and hospitals for activation analysis and isotope production. It turns out that a SLOWPOKE 3 variant was being developed for central and district heating applications.

November's meeting started off with a tech session discussing "Heat Pumps - Should they be used in our Ottawa Valley Winters". The evening program was "Airflow Metering and Room Pressure Control in Complex Building Structures" with speaker Phillip Bobbitt, President of Ultratech Inc.

The January meeting topic was "NRC Research Relating to ASHRAE Interests" with speaker Gustav Handegord of the National Research Council.

February was a special month because the Chapter's 30th Anniversary was celebrated. Society President Clint Phillips and Society Executive Vice President Andrew Boggs both attended. You can view photos of the event here.

The March newsletter is missing - perhaps the members needed a rest after the February meeting celebrations?

April's meeting topic was "Direct Digital Control, What it is, How it Applies to Present and Future Systems, and How to Specify It". The speaker was Paul Silverthorne of Multitrol, Toronto.

May's meeting topic was "What Air Filters are NOT Doing in Commercial Buildings" with speaker William Jones of Farr Inc., Toronto. Presumably, Dalton McIntyre turned over the gavel to John Lunde, and Past President Roy Beckman presented Dalton with the Past Presidents Pin.
