The following is an edit from the Document entitled
Ottawa Valley ASHRAE Chapter "50 Years of History"
compiled by Frank Bann et al., June 2000

The Chapter Meetings continued at the Cathay House through this Chapter year.

The meeting minutes are missing for this year but the newsletters are intact and afford the following:

September's meeting topic was "Toward '0' Energy in Non-Residential Buildings", with speaker Bob Tamblyn who was then an active member and director of well over a dozen energy, research, engineering and technical associations, and a Designated Energy Management Specialist.

Don Coggan, President Coggan Douserv Associates, spoke on "Building Automation Systems" at the October meeting. He described his method of assessing the "best value" an owner can obtain for automation systems.

The topic for November's meeting was University of Ottawa's "Integrated Energy Cascading Project" with speaker Alex Juchymenko of Cogeneration Associates, Toronto. The project was supported by the Ontario Ministry of Energy due to its innovative combination of cogeneration, medium temperature heat pumping and steam recompression. The utility generation project created thermal energy at half the cost of a traditionally fired natural gas boiler with cheaper electrical energy as well.

Jake Klassen spoke at January's meeting and his topic was "How will you Measure up in the Future?". At that time Jake was Senior Engineer of the Retrofit Programs Section of the Energy Conservation and Oil Substitution Branch, Energy Mines and Resources.

The topic for February's meeting was "Total Building Performance" and the speaker was Bob Davidge of Pubic Works Canada. He spoke about methods of measuring air quality, and poor air quality performance.

The March meeting was preceded by a tour of the David Florida Labs at CRC Shirley's Bay - Canada's own spacecraft test facility. The evening program speaker was Peter Townsend, Operations Manager from the Lab, and he spoke on the background leading to spacecraft type selection for missions.

In April the meeting topic was "Changes in the Operation and Maintenance of Crown-Owned Buildings", with guest speaker EJ Newman, Chief of Facilities Maintenance, Public Works Canada.

May's meeting topic was "Some Thoughts on Technology and Humanism" with speaker Tim Murray of Ottawa Architectural firm Murray & Murray, Griffiths Rankin. Presumably, John Lunde turned over the gavel to Frank Vakulik, and Past President Dalton McIntyre presented John with the Past Presidents Pin.
