The following is an edit from the Document entitled
Ottawa Valley ASHRAE Chapter "50 Years of History"
compiled by Frank
Bann et al., June 2000
The Chapter Meetings continued at Phileas Fogg through this Chapter year.
It was around about this period when the monthly newsletter was renamed the "Capital Communiqué". The meeting minutes are missing for this year but the newsletters are intact and afford the following:
The September meeting topic was a panel discussion entitled "How Much Commissioning is Enough" with guest speakers J Ward, Facilities Operations and Maintenance, Public Works Canada; John Robertson, President, Robertson & Associates; George Carscallen, President, Goodkey Weedmark & Associates; with moderator Frank Vaculik. Is commissioning useful? Is it being done properly on any jobs? How much is needed?
October's theme was very sporty, with the topic "The Ottawa Rough Riders and the CFL", with guest speaker Paul Robson, General Manager of the team.
In November the topic was "Adjustable Frequency Drives - Today and Tomorrow" with speaker Stephen Fecica of Relcon Inc. The subject matter resulted in this limerick in the newsletter:
The driven component goes "whir"
From a deep-throated "VROOM!" to a "purr"
Its variable speed drives
You can all bet your lives
This topic should cause quite a stir.
Chief Ross White of the Ottawa Fire Department was the guest speaker for January, and he spoke about "Buildings' Life Safety Systems for Fire Fighters".
In February the meeting topic was "CO2 and Indoor Air Quality" with guest speaker GS Presser of ACME Engineering Products Ltd. Carrying on with the limerick theme, this was in the newsletter (strictly speaking not really a limerick):
The air we all breathe is important
The quality of we're not sure
The speaker tonight will advise us
On how we can know if it's pure.
At the March meeting the program was "Premises Operation Management - Changing the Way You Look at Building Maintenance", with guest speaker David Honsberger of Black & McDonald Ltd. Limerick included was (terrible):
Too warm or too cold is a sin
Unneeded repairs cost more than a tin
Improper function's not funny
Unnecessary energy costs money
Operations and Maintenance "all-in".
Claude Mercier, President of Encon Insurance Managers Inc., was guest speaker for the April meeting, with his topic "The Engineer's Liability as regards Change Orders".
May's meeting topic was "Contract Bids and What is required by Various Sectors" with speakers: Mrs. Terry Baldock, Administrator for the Ottawa Bid Depository; Paul de la Chevrotiere, Regional Manager Contract Policy and Administration, Public Works Canada; and Jean Claude Lagasse, Quebec Bid Depository Systems. Presumably, Simon Jol turned over the gavel to Paul Baker, and Past President John Dugan presented Simon with the Past Presidents Pin.
