The Chapter Meetings continued at Phileas Fogg through this Chapter year.
The meeting minutes are missing for this year but the newsletters are intact and afford the following:
At September's meeting the topic was "Development of Environment-Friendly Chillers" with speaker Trevor Frith, National Sales Manager for the Applied Systems Division of York Air Conditioning Ltd. He addressed several aspects including CFC/HCFC background, development of non-CFC chillers from a manufacturer's point of view, field conversion of existing CFC to non-CFC refrigerants etc.
The October guest speaker was Michael Butters, Commercial Energy Advisor at Ontario Hydro. His topic was "What's Up for the Future", during which he addressed Ontario Hydro's concerns over their future energy requirements, and discussed demand management.
In November the topic was "The Application of ASHRAE Standard 62-1989 - Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, The Occupant's Perspective". The speaker was Claude Mainville, responsible for indoor air quality issues at the C.S.N. (Confederation of Trades Unions). He showed how the average building occupant remained largely unaffected by the new standard.
January's newsletter is missing so nothing to report for this.
The program for the February meeting was "A Status Report on Environment - Canada's Oil from Sludge Technology" and the guest speaker was HW Campbell. Chief of the Residue Management Division at Environment Canada's Wastewater Technology Centre in Burlington Ontario. Sewage sludge disposal was an increasing problem for municipalities, and Environment Canada was developing a technology which consisted of low-temperature conversion of sludge to liquid and solid fuel products.
"Cogeneration - Costs and Profitability" was the program for March. The speaker was Charles Robb of GA Robb Associates.
At the April meeting the speaker was NE Weber-Brown, General Manager, Mechanical Products Department, GEC Alsthom International Canada Inc. and his topic was "The Application of Axial & Mixed Flow Fans in Variable Air Volume Systems". He explored the key characteristics of controllable pitch axial and variable speed mixed flow fans.
May's meeting topic was "Principles of Combustion and Their Effect on Efficient Use of Natural Gas" with speaker Gary O'Neill, Industrial Utilization Manager, Consumers Gas. Presumably, Byron Landry turned over the gavel to Chris Frauley, and Past President Bill McKinnon presented Byron with the Past Presidents Pin.
