Ottawa Valley ASHRAE Chapter "50 Years of History"
compiled by Frank
Bann et al., June 2000
The Chapter Meetings continued at Phileas Fogg through this Chapter year.
The meeting minutes are missing for this year but the newsletters are intact and afford the following:
At September's meeting the topic was "EMCS - Standard Protocols (Energy Management Control System)" with speaker Jim Ford, Architectural and Engineering Services, Public Works Canada.
October's meeting was unusual in that it was held at the Consumers Gas Facility at 400 Coventry Road. A number of topics were covered including: plastic pipeline fusion; combination building heating/water systems; a tour of their Yazaki absorption chiller; etc.
November brought the celebration of the Chapter's 40th Anniversary. Kevin McGrath, President McGrath Canada and Director of the Credit Association of Canada (Ottawa Chapter), spoke on "How to Get Paid Your Profit" and covered prevention; Collection - on time; Get your extras!; How to identify problems in advance; and When push comes to shove - how to shove with feeling.
In January the program was "Stack Effect in Tall Buildings" with speaker John Lovatt or Morrison Hershfield Ltd. He was involved with the ASHRAE Task Group for Tall Buildings and he reported on the findings of this year long study.
February's topic was "Joint Construction and Duct Reinforcement in Today's Low Leakage Duct Systems" with speakers Ted O'Doherty and Gerry Turner of Comstock, and Ray Highland and Frank Martagh of Algonquin College.
Thomas Newmark, General Sales Manager of Copeland Canada, was the guest speaker for March. His topic was "New Compressor Technologies" during which he reviewed reciprocating and scroll technologies.
"Commissioning as an Integral Part of Building Quality Management" was April's program, and the speaker was our own Frank Vaculik.
May's meeting topic was "ARI Standard 550-92, Standard for Centrifugal and Rotary Screw Chillers" with speaker Robert Schmitt, Marketing Manager, Packaged Centrifugal and Screw Chillers, York International Ltd. Presumably, Neil Armstrong turned over the gavel to Ross McIntyre, and Past President Chris Frauley presented Neil with the Past Presidents Pin.
